Sokoto State Digital Village Pilot

A UNICEF-sponsored proof-of-concept: a solar-powered, community-embedded digital learning hub (one hub, three classrooms, 250 out-of-school learners) delivered through Bragi's bespoke Ilimi learning platform.

A row of adolescent girls in hijabs seated at a long desk inside the Sokoto Digital Village hub, each using a newly issued smartphone with the device boxes still in front of them.

The challenge

Northern Nigeria holds the country's largest concentration of out-of-school children, among them Almajiri boys in a traditional Qur'anic system with no economic pathway, and adolescent girls for whom formal schooling has never been an option. Fixed-schedule, mixed-space schooling struggles to reach them at the scale the situation demands.

Bragi's role & approach

In partnership with UNICEF, Bragi built and ran a 12-month pilot at the Sultan Muhammad Maccido Institute for Qur'an and General Studies: one solar-powered hub of three digital classrooms, a locally trained facilitation team, and a seven-domain curriculum delivered through Ilimi, a bespoke, SCORM-compliant platform designed around the learners' language and culture rather than against it.

What was delivered

  • A solar-powered, community-embedded learning hub: three digital classrooms running 24/7, independent of the national grid
  • Ilimi, a bespoke, SCORM-compliant learning platform (Laravel/PHP) integrated with Nigeria's Learning Passport, delivering content in Hausa, Arabic, and English
  • 250 out-of-school learners enrolled (150 Almajiri boys and 100 adolescent girls) on a 1:1 learner-to-tablet ratio
  • 30 local facilitators trained and inducted in digital pedagogy and the Ilimi platform
  • A localized, seven-domain curriculum spanning health, vocational, digital, life-skills, and Qur'anic learning
  • A completed 12-month pilot with outcomes documented in a UNICEF impact report
